On-Campus Galleries

W&L’s campus has several art galleries to showcase both our own collection of art, as well as rotating exhibits comprised of student, faculty, and visiting artist pieces. While students will occasionally use these spaces as classrooms, galleries are also open to the public so visitors and community members can visit and experience the art free of charge.

Staniar Gallery

Staniar Gallery is a 1,300 square foot space located in the Lenfest Center. The gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary and historical works in all media by regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists. Staniar is a pedagogical space, and exhibiting artists spend time conducting critiques, giving lectures and mentoring students. Gallery internships provide students the opportunity to participate in the entire exhibition process by working closely with the Gallery Director and exhibiting artists. Each year graduating seniors in studio art present their senior thesis projects in Staniar Gallery.

The gallery is open to the W&L community free of charge and the hours during the academic year are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For additional information, please call 540-458-8861.

Kamen Gallery

The Stan Kamen Collection was bequeathed to Washington and Lee in 1986 by Stan Kamen ’49 LL.B. The collection is permanently installed in the lobby of the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts and is regularly rotated for conservation purposes. The collection offers a view of the American West and particularly the “Old West” that has been created by some of America’s foremost 20th-century artists.

Lykes Atrium

Located in Wilson Hall, the Lykes Atrium is an ancillary exhibition space with an annual schedule of rotating art shows that augments the Staniar Gallery programming.
